Baked in Earth – 2015

The Baked in Earth Project, carried out and completed in Wythenshawe, Manchester was an exploration of sustainable cooking. With a focus on the local area, where canals are prevalent and therefore clay is also of easy access, I decided that clay would be the form to build and work with. First testing with clay and cob I created a number of cooking vessels, the most successful and useful of which were the clay ovens and rocket stoves. Two clay ovens and a range of rocket stoves were built at two sites, Wythenshawe park and Woodhouse park allotments Рthese sessions saw not only the completion of 2 superb clay ovens but also the successful training  of 20 individuals, allowing them to maintain the built ovens, but also giving them the knowledge to build these ovens in the future.
