Harrisburg University of Science and Technology

Intro

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology offers STEM-focused degree programs that lead to great careers in top science, technology, engineering, and mathematic fields. Their first campus in Philadelphia in the 1500 Spring Garden building was shared with Hussian College, my former employer. Keith was my contact for Harrisburg and approached me for visual branding based on my work in the shared entrance space for Hussian College.

My Role

  • Graphic Designer for interior wall and exterior window graphics.

  • Pre-Press Coordinator with large-scale vinyl print vendor.

Tech

  • Adobe Illustrator

  • Adobe Photoshop

Project Methodology

Philadelphia + STEM Programs + Brand Identity in Binary Code = One-of-a-Kind

Objective

Keith outlined their goals as we walked through the campus. A colorful use of their palette and the main branding element; binary code. Imagery of their STEM programs and Philadelphia culture. Student and staff achievements with quotes to inspire.

Research

After diving into the branding guide, researching the University’s main campus, gathering my own photos, textures, and example treatments I produced a pitch with a proof of concept. After that was accepted, I received all the branding elements fonts, swatches, and identity photos.

Common Spaces

Create

My pitch focused on 10 accent walls with full-wall collages. These would be printed on full white vinyl for installation. I recommend die-cut throughout the hallways and classroom of the campus. I used color gradients for a mix of varying looks and binary-code incorporated throughout that if read left to right is accurate with its text phrase, quote, or field of study companion.

Outcome

This was a well received addition to the campus and boosted student and staff school spirit. It blended perfectly with the industrial look of the building while warming the hallways and classrooms with smiling faces and regional touchstones.
